Director's Notes for
Les Misérables
From the moment we secured the rights to perform Les Miserables, the journey into Parisian history,
its rich culture and characters began. Many members of the Catwalk Theatre have read Victor Hugo's
epic novel, incorporating the background of this incredible tale into their performance. Bringing
Les Mis to the Pomona stage has extended beyond a theatrical endeavor. The study and appreciation
of this important literature and time period have become a source of enlightenment; the adaptation
into a musical experience, a labour of love. Students have had cause to examine the social and
moral implications that faced these characters in a time when little was certain, drawing parallels
to life as it is now.
In the past three months, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Campbell and I have been witness to incredible growth
in these young performers. Each has brought something unique to the process and I am proud of what their
efforts have produced. This show is the result of hundreds of rehearsal hours as well as personal
time spent constructing sets, having costume fittings, learning lyrics and stage movement. I believe
each of these students will carry the lessons of commitment and discipline from this process into
their lives whether they pursue a path in the performing arts or not.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children. The hours have been long, but the rewards great.
